Carl Hiaasen said he was “devastated” and “heartsick” to learn his brother was one of the five victims killed in Thursday’s shooting. “Rob was an editor and columnist at the paper, and one of the most gentle and funny people I’ve ever known,” he wrote. “He spent his whole gifted career as a journalist, and he believed profoundly in the craft and mission of serving the public’s right to know the news.” Rob Hiaasen, 59, was an assistant editor and columnist at the Capital Gazette newspaper, where he had worked since 2010. He had recently celebrated his 33rd wedding anniversary last week with his wife, Maria Hiaasen, according to The Capital. Before joining The Capital, he worked as a features writer at The Baltimore Sun. “We called him Big Rob because he was so tall, but it was his remarkable heart and humor that made him larger than all of us,” Carl Hiaasen wrote. “Hug your loved ones like there’s no tomorrow.” Police identified the four other victims killed in the shooting as 61-year-old Gerald Fischman, 56-year-old John McNamara, 34-year-old Rebecca Smith and 65-year-old Wendi Winters. Alleged gunman Jarrod Ramos, 38, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder. Investigators said he entered the building carrying smoke bombs, flash grenades and a shotgun and headed straight for the newsroom. Journalists dove under their desks to take cover. Ramos has not been cooperating with police, and investigators said they identified him through facial-recognition technology. A decoded message from 1972 has solved the mystery of infamous hijacker D.B. Cooper, a documentary filmmaker claims.
Television and film producer Tom Colbert said the letter, sent to The Oregonian and obtained by suing the FBI for the Cooper files, points to a Vietnam veteran named Robert Rackstraw as the leading suspect. Rackstraw’s name has been mentioned frequently by those investigating the unsolved 1971 hijacking, including in Colbert’s 2016 book “The Last Master Outlaw,” and the History Channel documentary “D.B. Cooper: Case Closed.”
Now 74 and living in San Diego, Rackstraw has not admitted involvement.
On Nov. 24, 1971, a man identified as “D.B. Cooper” hijacked a Boeing 727 as it flew between Portland and Seattle. He demanded and received $200,000 in ransom money before parachuting out of the plane over the Northwest. He was never seen again but letters from someone taking credit for the hijacking appeared at newspapers through the years.
As part of his investigation, Colbert contacted Rick Sherwood, a former member of the Army Security Agency who served with Rackstraw, to decode the recently obtained letter. Sherwood claims it contains a confession that includes Rackstraw’s initials, the Army’s Special Warfare School he attended and one of his military units.
You can see copies of the letters and the alleged codes here.
Rackstraw is a former paratrooper and Vietnam veteran. In 1969, he was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama for chopper and fixed-wing flight training before deploying to Vietnam. Records show he returned to Fort Rucker in 1971, where he was detained for domestic assault. A later military investigation showed Rackstraw was accused of falsifying his college records and lying about his rank and medals and was forced to resign from the Army.
Colbert believes Cooper was working for the CIA, which covered up his identity in connection to the hijacking. Rackstraw was cleared by the FBI in 1979; the bureau officially closed the Cooper case without resolution in 2016.
The case remains the only unsolved case of piracy in the history of U.S. aviation.

Traquarus Malik Brannon and Jada Lyniese Williams have been indicted in the Feb. 11, 2018 shooting death of 17-year-old Brandon Burpo in his Clay subdivision. (Jefferson County Jail) ( )

Two former Hoover High School seniors have been indicted in the ambush killing of a Clay teen.
Traquarius Brannon, 18, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a charge of capital murder. His girlfriend at the time, 19-year-old Jada Williams, was indicted on murder. The indictments were issued June 22 and made public Friday.
The teens are charged in the Feb. 11 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Brandon Burpo, which police say was motivated by revenge. They say the suspects lured Burpo out of his home and then opened fire.
The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. that Sunday in the 4400 block of Winchester Hills Way in Clay. Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene to find Burpo wounded. He was rushed to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:09 p.m.
Jefferson County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Randy Christian said information at the scene was that Burpo had received a phone call, went outside to meet someone nearby and was shot.
Sheriff’s detectives reviewed records from the victim’s cell phone and discovered the call luring him out came from Williams.
Williams and Brannon, when later questioned by investigators, claimed the victim had recently robbed them. Williams admitted making the call that lured the victim out. When Burpo arrived at their vehicle, Brannon began shooting at him, Christian said.

In Mobile, police responded to a call from the 2300 block of Hillwood Drive South, off Dauphin Island Parkway, where the body of 14-year-old Jahmarcus Smith was recovered. The younger boy survived, but Smith died in his attempt to help.

/form Five people killed in a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland have been named by police. The victims were identified as Robert Hiaassen, Wendi Winters, Rebecca Smith, Gerald Feshman and John McNamara. All were employed by the paper and covered a range of beats for the small, community-based paper. Florida native Robert, 59 worked as assistant editor and columnist for the paper since 2010. Chase Cook, a reporter for the paper, paid tribute to his former editor on Twitter: “He called me this morning asking about a headline clarification. He was an amazing editor who made me a better reporter.” Hiaassen’s brother Carl, a well-known journalist and author, said his sibling was “a remarkable brother and a remarkable man.” “He loved the mission of journalism and he loved the idea of working at a paper like the Gazette, doing hometown news, which is the core and the heart of our business,” he said. Wendi Winters worked as a Community news reporter and special publications editor for the paper, Gerald Fischman was editorial page editor, John McNamara was a writer and Rebecca Smith was a sales assistant. Jimmy DeButts, an editor at the Capital Gazette, tweeted that he was devastated, heartbroken and numb. “I’m in no position to speak, just know @capgaznews reporters & editors give all they have every day. There are no 40 hour weeks, no big paydays – just a passion for telling stories from our community,” he wrote. One of the group’s flagship papers, the Capital, plans to publish a Friday edition, several reporters with the group said. “I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow,” reporter Chase Cook said hours after the shooting. Police identified the suspect in the Capital Gazette shooting as 38-year-old Maryland-local Jarrod Ramos. Ramos is believed to have shot the employees from outside the newsroom and then continued his killing spree inside. Police arrested him without a struggle after they found him hiding underneath a desk. Reports suggest Ramos was uncooperative with police during interrogation and reportedly mutilated his fingertips so he could not be identified using prints. He was described as having a “long-running” feud with the Capitol Gazette and unsuccessfully sued the paper for defamation in 2012. His Twitter account shows numerous tweets directed at the company and its staff. In 2015 he wrote: “Referring to @realDonaldTrump as “unqualified” capgaznews could end badly (again).” In 2012, Ramos brought a defamation lawsuit against Eric Hartley, formerly a staff writer and columnist with The Capital, and Thomas Marquardt, then editor and publisher of The Capital, according to a court filing. In 2015, Maryland’s second-highest court upheld a ruling in favor of the Capital Gazette and a former reporter who were accused by Ramos of defamation, the Baltimore Sun reported.・・・続きはこちら⇒Identities of Capital Gazette newspaper shooting victims revealed by police
